International SEO

The right version. For the right market.

International SEO helps people reach a useful country or language version of your website. RankNexus connects market research, localised content and URL relationships for businesses genuinely serving multiple audiences, with technical specifications and ownership that your team can maintain as the offer changes.

Country, language and office location are different facts. The diagram shows illustrative page audiences.

The decision that matters

Does this audience need a different page?

A new country URL needs a business reason: a different offer, buying experience, language or evidence. Translating a keyword list is only a starting hypothesis. Combine Content SEO with Technical SEO when planning the equivalent pages.

Who it is for
Businesses ready to support real country or language audiences and keep their information current.
What shapes scope
Markets, languages, page groups, localisation, platform controls and qualified review capacity.
The boundary
Hreflang describes alternatives. It does not force indexation, override conflicting canonicals or guarantee rankings and commercial outcomes.

The structure decision

Choose the tradeoff you can maintain.

Subfolders, subdomains and country-code domains can all serve international sites. None replaces market fit, localised content or clear ownership.

Architecture decision recordIllustrative example

Three URL structures, with ownership attached

01

Subfolders

example.com/en-gb/

A shared domain and platform can simplify maintenance. Teams still need clear locale ownership and reliable routing.

02

Subdomains

uk.example.com

Can support separate platform or team needs, with additional coordination for configuration, reporting and releases.

03

Country-code domains

example.co.uk

Offer a country-specific domain identity, with separate domain management and often greater operational overhead.

Hreflang identifies equivalent language or regional versions. Canonicals communicate a preferred URL among duplicates. Coordinate both signals; do not point every distinct locale at one global page by default.

Illustrative structure comparison, not a recommendation to enter any market. Existing signals, platform constraints and migration risk also matter.

What RankNexus does

A market plan your content and development teams can share.

01

Research the actual audience

Separate language from country. Review local terminology, the offer, competing results, availability and buying expectations. A single English page may be sufficient when the experience is genuinely the same.

OutputA market, language and equivalent-page map.

02

Specify the relationships

Plan supported language and region codes, self and reciprocal hreflang references, accessible alternatives and suitable canonical signals. An x-default selector can be appropriate. Preserve user choice rather than forcing every visitor to an IP-derived version.

OutputAlternate-page specifications and release checks.

03

Keep the local facts accurate

Identify who verifies currency, availability, service terms, support and market-relevant proof. Ecommerce SEO adds product and catalogue dependencies. Localisation should reflect actual differences, not invented offices or country-name substitutions.

OutputLocalisation briefs and an ongoing update workflow.

What we agree together

Commercial readiness

Your business verifies that the offer, support, delivery and applicable terms are suitable for the market. An SEO brief cannot establish operational or legal readiness.

Language and market review

Qualified reviewers check terminology and local meaning where required. Their availability, provider and budget are agreed; we do not claim an in-house native-speaking team for every language.

Maintenance and release

The CMS and development owner must support the URL and annotation plan. Changes to products, prices or service boundaries need a route to each affected version.

Practical questions

International SEO, explained.

When do we need hreflang?

When useful alternatives exist for different languages or regions and their relationships need to be clear. Each participating page should identify itself and relevant equivalents, with reciprocal references. A country alone is not a language code. Hreflang does not replace useful content, consistent canonicals or accessible URLs, and it is not a standalone ranking boost.

Should we use subfolders, subdomains or country domains?

Each can be appropriate. The choice depends on the current site, branding, market strategy, ownership, platform and maintenance capacity. No structure removes the need for localisation. An existing site should not be migrated merely to match a preferred format; a justified move needs redirects, updated links and validation.

Can UK and US pages share English content?

Yes, where the shared explanation is accurate and useful. Differences should reflect real needs such as currency, terminology, availability or terms. Near-identical regional pages need a considered canonical decision alongside hreflang. If there is no useful difference, extra versions may only add maintenance.
