The guide

Schema markup and JSON-LD, explained with examples.

What is JSON-LD?

JSON-LD is a way of writing structured data as a small block of code inside a script tag, separate from the text visitors read. Google supports several formats but recommends the one that's easiest to implement and maintain, which in most cases is JSON-LD. Here is Organization markup for a fictional electrician:

Organization JSON-LD for a fictional business
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Organization",
  "name": "Harbourline Electrical",
  "url": "https://harbourline.example",
  "logo": "https://harbourline.example/logo.png",
  "telephone": "+1 303 555 0142",
  "sameAs": [
    "https://www.linkedin.com/company/harbourline-electrical",
    "https://www.facebook.com/harbourlineelectrical"
  ]
}
</script>

Organization schema: what to include

Google has no required properties for Organization markup. It recommends adding the ones that are relevant and useful, and placing the markup on your homepage or a single page that describes your organization. The ones that matter most for most businesses:

Schema markup for AI search

Structured data isn't required for Google's AI features, and Google says there's no special schema.org markup for generative AI search. What markup does is state your facts in a form machines read reliably: your name, what you do, where you are and which profiles are yours. That helps search engines and AI tools connect what is said about you, as long as it matches what visitors see. Google is clear that markup shouldn't describe information that isn't visible on the page.

If AI answers describe your business wrongly, markup is one part of the fix. AI search optimization covers the rest: consistent facts across your site and profiles, and mentions on the sites AI answers trust.

How to add and test your markup

  1. Paste the script into the page's HTML, in the head or the body. Most site builders have a custom code setting for this.
  2. Publish, then test the live address in Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator.
  3. Check Search Console over the following weeks for structured data errors.

How to fix structured data errors

  • Invalid JSON: a missing comma, a comma after the last item, or curly quotes pasted from a word processor. A validator shows the line.
  • Missing required properties for the result you want, such as name and address for LocalBusiness.
  • Wrong formats: dates as 2026-10-17, times as 09:00, and full https addresses for links and images.
  • Markup that doesn't match the page. Hidden or different facts can lead search engines to ignore it.
  • Two plugins or a plugin and a theme each adding their own, conflicting blocks. Keep one source.

For local details such as address and opening hours, use the LocalBusiness Schema Generator. To see whether a page has valid markup already, run the AEO Checker.

The short answers

What you need to know.

What is schema markup?

Schema markup is structured data, usually JSON-LD, that states facts about a page in a format machines read reliably: your business name, address, phone, opening hours or the questions a page answers. It uses the shared vocabulary at schema.org.

Where do I add JSON-LD?

Paste the script into the page's HTML, in the head or body; both work. Add Organization or LocalBusiness markup to your homepage or contact page, and FAQPage markup only to the page that shows those questions.

Does schema help with AI search?

It can help AI systems and search engines read your facts accurately, which supports consistent descriptions of your business. It is not a shortcut: the facts must match what visitors see and what other sites say about you.

Questions

Schema Markup Generator, answered.

Will schema markup give me rich results?

Not guaranteed. Google decides which rich results to show, and some types, such as FAQ rich results, now appear for very few sites. Markup still helps search engines understand the page.

What is JSON-LD?

A way of writing structured data as a script block, separate from the text visitors read. Google recommends it in most cases because it's the easiest format to add and maintain.

Does structured data help SEO?

It helps search engines understand a page and can make it eligible for rich results, such as product or event details. It isn't a shortcut to higher rankings, and it must match what the page shows.

Which schema should a small business use?

Usually Organization on the homepage, or LocalBusiness (or a more specific type) if customers visit you or you serve a local area.

How do I check my schema?

Run the page through Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator after publishing, and fix any errors they report.

Can I mark up information that isn't on the page?

No. Structured data should describe what visitors can see. Marking up hidden or false details can lead search engines to ignore it.

What is schema markup, in simple terms?

Labels in your page's code that tell search engines what things are: this is a business, this is its address, this is a price. Google describes structured data as a standardized format for providing information about a page. Visitors don't see it; search engines and AI tools read it.

How do I add schema markup to my website?

Create the JSON-LD code, for example with this generator, and paste it into the page inside a script tag of type application/ld+json. Google recommends JSON-LD, and it can sit in the page's head or body. Then test the live page with Google's Rich Results Test.

How do I add schema markup in WordPress?

Most SEO plugins add basic schema for you, such as Organization and Article. For anything else, paste the JSON-LD from this generator into a plugin that adds code to the page head, or into a Custom HTML block on that page, and mark up only what the page shows.

Where does schema markup go in the HTML?

JSON-LD goes in a script tag with type application/ld+json, in either the head or the body of the page. Google says it can also read JSON-LD that a script or your content management system adds after the page loads.

Is my information stored anywhere?

No. The code is built in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to us.
