The guide

How Google Ads budgets work, and how to set yours.

How the average daily budget works

  • You set an average daily budget for each campaign.
  • On busy days Google can spend up to twice that amount.
  • Over a month it won't charge more than 30.4 times the daily budget, the average number of days in a month. If it overspends beyond that, Google credits the difference.
  • If you change the budget mid-month, the monthly limit is recalculated for the rest of the month.

So a $50 daily budget means up to $100 on a given day and no more than $1,520 for the month.

Setting a starting budget for a new account

  1. List the searches you want to appear for, grouped by service.
  2. Look up their cost per click in Keyword Planner, and use the higher end of the bid range to stay cautious.
  3. Assume a modest conversion rate until you have your own data.
  4. Work out the clicks you need for a number of leads you can learn from in a month, then the budget, with the calculator above.
  5. Run for several weeks before judging, and review search terms every week.

For example, 20 leads at a 5% conversion rate needs 400 clicks; at $4 a click that is $1,600 a month, or about $53 a day. These numbers are illustrative; yours depend on your market.

Budget versus bids

The budget caps what you spend; the bidding strategy decides what you pay for each click. Strategies such as Maximize conversions or Target CPA set bids automatically, while Manual CPC leaves them to you. If a campaign shows “Limited by budget”, its ads stopped showing for part of the day; raise the budget, narrow the targeting or lower bids rather than spreading money thinly.

How to split a budget across campaigns

  • Keep searches for your brand name in their own campaign; they are cheap and shouldn't hide the cost of finding new customers.
  • Give each main service or location its own campaign, so you can fund the ones that bring customers.
  • Use a shared budget only when campaigns genuinely compete for the same money.

The short answers

What you need to know.

How do you calculate a Google Ads budget?

Work back from your goal: leads wanted ÷ conversion rate = clicks needed, and clicks needed × average cost per click = monthly budget. Divide by 30.4, the average number of days in a month that Google uses, to get the average daily budget.

How does Google Ads spend a daily budget?

Google treats your daily budget as an average. On busy days it can spend up to twice the daily amount, and over a month it won't charge more than 30.4 times your average daily budget. If it overspends beyond that, Google credits the difference.

Where do I find my cost per click and conversion rate?

From your own account if you have one: the Avg. CPC and Conv. rate columns. For a new account, Keyword Planner shows bid ranges for your keywords; use the higher end to stay cautious, and treat the first month as a test.

Questions

Google Ads Budget Calculator, answered.

Is there a minimum budget for Google Ads?

The useful minimum is a budget that buys enough clicks to learn from. If yours buys only a handful of clicks a day, it can take months to know whether the campaign works.

Why did Google spend more than my daily budget?

Because the daily budget is an average. Google can spend up to twice it on a day with more searches, and balances that across the month so you aren't charged more than 30.4 times the daily amount.

How much should a small business spend on Google Ads?

Enough to reach a lead count that makes the effort worthwhile, at a cost per lead you can afford. Use this calculator for the budget, and the Cost Per Lead Calculator to check the most each lead can cost.

Does the management fee come out of the ad budget?

Not with us: ad spend is paid directly to Google from your own account, and our fee is separate. Ask any agency the same question, since some take a share of spend.

How much do Google Ads cost?

There's no fixed price. Search ads are paid per click, at a price set in Google's auction, and you control the total with an average daily budget. Google can spend up to twice that budget on a busy day, but no more than 30.4 times it in a month.

How much do Google Ads cost per month?

At most your average daily budget times 30.4, Google's monthly limit: a $50 daily budget can cost up to $1,520 in a month. An agency's management fee is extra; ours is paid to us, never taken from your ad spend.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. The calculator runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to us.
