What is FAQ schema?
FAQ schema (FAQPage) is structured data that lists the questions on a page and their answers, so machines can read them as pairs. It should only describe a FAQ that visitors can see on that page.
Free tool / FAQ Schema Generator
Generate FAQPage structured data in JSON-LD from the questions and answers on your page. Add each question exactly as visitors read it, then copy the script. Google now shows FAQ rich results for very few sites, so use this markup to describe the page accurately, not to chase a feature.

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "FAQPage",
"mainEntity": [{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "Do you see new patients on Saturdays?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "Yes. We see new patients from 9am to 1pm every Saturday. Book online or call us."
}
}]
}
</script>Each question in the markup must appear on the page, with the same answer visitors can read.
Rarely. On 8 August 2023 Google said FAQ rich results would only be shown for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. For other sites the markup no longer creates the expandable questions under a result. Google also said there's no need to remove existing FAQ markup: structured data that isn't used doesn't cause problems in Search.
The value now is clarity: the markup states each question and answer as a pair that machines read reliably, which suits answer engine optimization.
| Weak answer | Stronger answer |
|---|---|
| “It depends on many factors. Contact us to find out more.” | “A filling costs $150 to $250 depending on the size and material. We give you the exact price before we start.” |
| “We serve lots of areas.” | “We cover Denver, Aurora and Lakewood. Outside those areas we charge a $40 call-out fee.” |
Answer in the first sentence, add the one detail that matters, and keep each answer specific to your business. Then check the page with the AEO Checker.
The short answers
FAQ schema (FAQPage) is structured data that lists the questions on a page and their answers, so machines can read them as pairs. It should only describe a FAQ that visitors can see on that page.
Since 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for a small number of well-known, authoritative government and health sites. For most businesses the markup no longer creates a visible feature, but it still states your answers clearly for search engines and AI assistants.
Answer the question in the first sentence, then add the detail. Keep each answer specific and accurate, and avoid repeating the same question on several pages.
Questions
Not if it matches the page. Marking up questions that visitors can't see, or adverts dressed as questions, goes against Google's guidelines.
As many as the page genuinely answers. Quality matters more than count.
There's no need. Google said in 2023 that structured data it doesn't use causes no problems in Search. Keep it where it matches a real, visible FAQ.
Yes, as long as each page shows its own questions. Avoid copying the same FAQ onto many pages.
It can help AI systems read your answers as clear question and answer pairs. Whether an assistant cites you depends far more on the quality of the answers and your reputation elsewhere.
