How do you calculate CPM?
CPM = total cost ÷ impressions × 1,000. If $500 buys 50,000 impressions, the CPM is 500 ÷ 50,000 × 1,000 = $10. To find impressions from a budget, divide the budget by the CPM and multiply by 1,000.

CPM is the cost per 1,000 impressions: total cost ÷ impressions × 1,000. Enter any two of total cost, impressions and CPM, and the calculator works out the third, plus the cost of a single impression. It works for Facebook, Instagram, Google, YouTube and any ad bought by the thousand.

The guide
CPM = total cost ÷ impressions × 1,000
Impressions = total cost ÷ CPM × 1,000
Total cost = impressions × CPM ÷ 1,000The M is mille, Latin for thousand, so CPM is the price of 1,000 impressions. Divide it by 1,000 for the cost of a single impression.
| You know | Sum | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| $500 spent, 50,000 impressions | 500 ÷ 50,000 × 1,000 | A CPM of $10 |
| A $1,000 budget at an $8 CPM | 1,000 ÷ 8 × 1,000 | 125,000 impressions |
| 200,000 impressions at a $6 CPM | 200,000 × 6 ÷ 1,000 | $1,200 in total |
In the period 5 Sep 2025 – 5 Sep 2026, a Schengen visa lead campaign we ran on Meta for Easy Travels, a UK travel and visa service, spent £1,964.52 on 337,274 impressions: a CPM of about £5.82. It brought 612 leads at £3.21 each, which is the number that mattered to the client.
That is one campaign in one market, so treat it as an example, not a benchmark. The full record is in the Easy Travels case study.
Cost per click = CPM ÷ (click-through rate × 1,000)
Cost per lead = cost per click ÷ click-to-lead rateAt a $10 CPM and a 1% click-through rate, a click costs 10 ÷ (0.01 × 1,000) = $1. If 10% of clicks become leads, each lead costs $10. Halve the click-through rate and the cost per lead doubles, with the CPM unchanged. The Facebook Ads Cost Calculator runs these sums from a budget, and the Cost Per Lead Calculator shows the most a lead can cost you.
| Metric | What it measures | Most useful for |
|---|---|---|
| CPM | The cost of 1,000 impressions | Comparing the price of reach across audiences and placements |
| CPC | The cost of one click | Search ads and traffic campaigns |
| CPA or CPL | The cost of one action, such as a sale or lead | Judging whether a campaign pays |
| eCPM | Cost or earnings per 1,000 impressions, however the ads were bought | Comparing campaigns or placements priced in different ways |
A lower CPM is only worth chasing if leads and sales hold up. Meta Ads management is how we balance the two for clients.
The short answers
CPM = total cost ÷ impressions × 1,000. If $500 buys 50,000 impressions, the CPM is 500 ÷ 50,000 × 1,000 = $10. To find impressions from a budget, divide the budget by the CPM and multiply by 1,000.
It depends on the platform, country, audience and season, so there is no single good figure. Compare a campaign with your own past CPMs, and judge it by what a lead or sale costs, because a cheap impression that never converts is still wasted.
For one real example, a Schengen visa lead campaign we ran on Meta for Easy Travels worked out at about £5.82 per 1,000 impressions.
CPM is the cost of 1,000 impressions, CPC the cost of one click and CPA the cost of one action, such as a lead or sale. They connect: CPC = CPM ÷ (click-through rate × 1,000), and CPA = CPC ÷ conversion rate.
Questions
Cost per mille, from the Latin for thousand: the price of 1,000 ad impressions.
Impressions = budget ÷ CPM × 1,000. A $1,000 budget at a $10 CPM buys about 100,000 impressions.
Ad platforms price impressions in auctions, so CPM rises with more competition for the same audience, smaller audiences, busy seasons and ads people engage with less. Meta names ad quality, bidding strategy, budget type and objective among its cost factors.
Effective CPM: total earnings or cost divided by impressions, times 1,000, used to compare campaigns or ad placements priced in different ways.
No. A low CPM on an audience that never clicks or converts costs more per lead than a higher CPM on the right people. Use the Facebook Ads Cost Calculator to see how CPM turns into cost per lead.
Divide the cost by the number of impressions and multiply by 1,000. $500 for 50,000 impressions is a CPM of $10.
