Cost per lead: formula, examples and how to lower it.

How to calculate cost per lead

Cost per lead and what a lead is worth
Cost per lead = total cost ÷ number of leads
Cost per customer = total cost ÷ customers won
Most a lead can cost = customer value × close rate × gross margin

With the calculator's example numbers, $2,000 of spend that brings 50 leads is a cost per lead of 2,000 ÷ 50 = $40. If 20% of those leads buy, each customer costs $200. If a customer is worth $1,000 at a 50% margin, a lead can cost up to $1,000 × 20% × 50% = $100 before it loses money.

Why the cheapest leads aren't always the best

Three fictional channels for the same business
ChannelSpendLeadsCost per leadClose rateCost per customer
Channel A$2,000100$205%$400
Channel B$2,00050$4020%$200
Channel C$2,00025$8040%$200

Channel A wins on cost per lead and loses on cost per customer. Judge channels on what a customer costs whenever you can match leads to sales.

Real cost per lead, from our accounts

The typical average cost per lead across our client campaigns runs from £2.50 to £6.50. Two published examples from Meta lead ads for UK travel businesses:

These are one channel in one industry, not a benchmark for yours. The full records are in the Travel To Kabba case study and the Easy Travels case study.

How to lower your cost per lead

  1. Make the offer clear in the first line of the ad and the page.
  2. Shorten the form to the questions you need to qualify a lead.
  3. Make the landing page load fast on phones.
  4. Test new creative regularly; tired ads cost more.
  5. Exclude existing customers and people who already converted.
  6. Tighten targeting only after the offer and page are right.

Measuring lead quality

Cost per lead only tells half the story. Mark each lead as qualified or not, then won or lost, in a spreadsheet or CRM. Google Ads can import offline conversions and Meta accepts events through its Conversions API, so the platforms can learn which leads become customers. Meta Ads management and conversion optimization build that loop for clients. If most of your leads are a poor fit, our guide to website traffic but no leads shows where to look.

The short answers

What you need to know.

How do you calculate cost per lead?

Cost per lead (CPL) = total spend ÷ number of leads. Include everything the channel costs you, such as fees and tools, not just ad spend, or the figure will look lower than it really is.

What is a good cost per lead?

One below what a lead is worth to you: customer value × close rate × gross margin. That limit is different for every business, which is why industry averages mislead.

For reference, the typical average cost per lead across our own client campaigns runs from £2.50 to £6.50. That reflects our clients' channels and markets, not a benchmark for yours.

Why does cost per customer matter more than cost per lead?

Because cheap leads that never buy are expensive. A $20 lead that closes 1 time in 4 costs $80 per customer; a $50 lead that closes 1 time in 2 costs $100. Compare channels on cost per customer whenever you can.

Questions

Cost Per Lead Calculator, answered.

What counts as a lead?

Decide before you measure: a form sent, a call over a set length or a booked appointment. Count the same thing every month, and remove spam and duplicates.

Should I include agency fees in cost per lead?

Yes, for the true cost. Many teams track both: ad spend per lead to compare campaigns, and total cost per lead to judge the channel.

How can I lower my cost per lead?

Start with what happens after the click: a clearer offer, a faster page and a shorter form. Then tighten the targeting. Cutting the budget alone doesn't fix a high cost per lead.

Is cost per lead the same as cost per acquisition?

Not usually. Cost per lead counts inquiries; cost per acquisition (CPA) usually counts customers or sales. Ad platforms sometimes call any tracked conversion an acquisition, so check what your account counts.

How do you calculate cost per lead?

Divide what you spent by the number of leads it brought in: $1,000 of spend and 40 leads is $25 a lead. Count leads the same way every month, and add agency fees when you want the full cost.

What is a good cost per lead for Facebook ads?

One well below what a lead is worth to you, so it depends on your business. For reference, our two UK travel clients' Meta lead campaigns run at £3.17 to £3.29 a lead, and our clients' average cost per lead ranges from £2.50 to £6.50.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. The calculator runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to us.
