The short answer
If your business needs to be found for real commercial questions, focus on clear pages, accurate information, technical access and measurement you can trust. The alphabet of SEO, GEO and AEO mostly describes different ways people talk about that job as search experiences change, including generative answers that cite or summarize the web.
What SEO, GEO and AEO mean
- SEO (search engine optimization): making your pages easy for search engines such as Google and Bing to crawl, understand and rank for the searches your customers make.
- GEO (generative engine optimization), also called AI search optimization or LLM SEO: making your business easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity to find, trust and cite when they answer a question.
- AEO (answer engine optimization): writing and structuring pages so a clear answer to a specific question can be lifted straight into a featured snippet, a voice answer or an AI summary.
All three rest on the same foundation: useful, accurate pages that search systems can reach and trust. That is why it makes sense to plan them as one piece of work, seen from three angles.

How the terms overlap
| Label | What people usually mean | What remains useful work | What it is not |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Helping relevant pages earn visibility in search results for people researching a need. | Information architecture, content quality, internal links, crawl/index access, intent match. | A guarantee of rankings, traffic or revenue. |
| GEO | Being useful to generative / AI-assisted search experiences that summarize or cite sources. | Original, attributable answers; clear entities and evidence; pages systems can retrieve and trust. | A secret markup file or ranking formula an agency can sell as exclusive. |
| AEO | Structuring answers so they can appear as concise responses (including answer-like surfaces). | Question-led pages, unambiguous statements, supporting detail, accessible HTML. | A promise of a featured snippet or rich result. FAQs help readers either way. |
Google’s own guidance emphasizes useful original content and sound technical foundations for AI features in Search, rather than proprietary “AI ranking files.” What is llms.txt? explains the best-known example. Observations in Search Console’s generative AI performance report can help you see impressions in AI features; they do not, by themselves, prove which page caused a sale.
GEO vs SEO: what is actually different?
SEO aims to get your pages ranked in a list of results that people click. GEO aims to get your business named, and your pages cited, inside an answer that an AI system writes. Most of the work is shared: pages search systems can reach, clear facts and real proof. What changes is where you look and what you measure.
| Compared on | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Where you appear | A ranked list of links in Google or Bing. | Inside an answer from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity or Copilot. |
| What success looks like | Rankings, clicks and inquiries from search. | Being named, being cited as a source, and being described accurately. |
| Main levers | Technical access, pages that match what people search for, internal links and links from other sites. | The same, plus consistent facts across your site and profiles, and mentions on the sites AI answers cite. |
| How you measure it | Search Console performance, rankings and analytics. | A fixed set of buyer questions checked every month, Search Console’s generative AI report, and AI referrals in analytics. |
GEO without SEO rarely works. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear in its AI features, and OpenAI says sites that opt out of its search crawler are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. Treat GEO as SEO with a wider view of where answers appear. Generative engine optimization explains how we run it.
AEO vs SEO: what is actually different?
AEO is narrower than both. It is about the shape of an answer on the page: the question as a heading, a direct answer in the first sentence or two, then the detail. That shape makes it easier for featured snippets, voice assistants and AI summaries to lift a clear answer, and it helps readers too.
- SEO decides whether the page can be found and ranked at all.
- AEO decides whether a specific answer on that page is easy to lift: one question per section, the answer first, plain words, and nothing important hidden in an image or a tab.
- FAQ sections and FAQ markup can support AEO, but Google says no special schema.org markup is needed for its generative AI features, and structured data never guarantees a rich result.
If you only do one thing for AEO, rewrite the opening of your main service pages so the first two sentences answer the question a buyer actually asks. The free AEO Checker tests a page for this and 11 other basics, and answer engine optimization is how we do it for clients. For Google specifically, see how to rank in Google AI Overviews.
A fictional customer-discovery example
Work that stays useful across experiences
- Define the commercial questions your buyers actually ask, and which page should own each answer.
- Publish original detail: process, constraints, proof, definitions and updates with dates where claims change.
- Keep HTML crawlable with ordinary links and descriptive anchors (see Google’s crawlable-links guidance).
- Fix access problems: blocked resources, accidental noindex, orphan pages, broken canonicals.
- Separate crawler preferences carefully, such as search-discovery bots and training crawlers, instead of treating all bots as one switch. Our free Robots.txt Tester shows each one's status.
- Measure with the tools you have: Search performance, AI-feature impressions where available, and business outcomes you define, without pretending they are the same number.
What additional observation can and cannot show
Impressions, citations or mentions in AI features can show that a system surfaced your content in a given period. They do not prove that every mention was accurate, that your competitors were absent, or that the mention caused an enquiry. To check mentions yourself, see how to track your brand in AI search. Ranking positions in classic results do not prove revenue. Traffic without enquiry quality does not prove the offer is working.
How to measure the success of GEO
Measure GEO by sampling, because no AI assistant publishes how often it names you. Pick 20 to 30 buyer questions, ask them the same way on the same platforms every month, and track a few numbers alongside what your own analytics can see:
| Measure | How to get it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Mention rate | The share of your buyer questions where an answer names you, per platform | Whether AI assistants know you for the work you sell |
| Citation rate | The share of answers that link to one of your pages | Whether your pages are the evidence answers rely on |
| Accuracy | Whether the answer gets your services, prices and locations right | Which facts need fixing on your site and listings |
| Share of voice | Your mentions compared with each competitor's, on the same questions | Who AI recommends instead of you |
| AI feature impressions | Search Console's generative AI performance report, by page | How often Google showed your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| Visits and enquiries | Analytics, filtered for utm_source=chatgpt.com and other AI referrers, plus “how did you hear about us?” | Whether the mentions bring people who enquire |
Judge the trend over three months or more, not one month's answers, since the same question can get a different answer on another day. How to track your brand in AI search gives the monthly method step by step, and the AI Visibility Audit sets the baseline across 30 buyer questions.
How to choose an appropriate scope
- List five to ten commercial questions that precede a useful enquiry or purchase.
- Map each question to an existing URL, or note that none exists.
- Mark missing evidence: facts, photos with permission, policies, pricing frames, service boundaries.
- Check technical access for those URLs before commissioning large content batches.
- Agree what you will measure for 30–90 days and what would change the plan.
- If you need delivery help, use the AI search or SEO service pages to understand how RankNexus scopes the work. Keep this article as the decision frame.

Worksheet: customer question to next action
Fill this for your own business. The sample rows are fictional and labelled. No email is required to use it.
| Customer question | Existing evidence | Best source page | Missing information | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Do you cover our area? | Phone script only (fictional) | /services/areas (missing) | Postcodes, travel policy, response times | Draft area page with map boundaries and exclusions |
| What is included in maintenance? | PDF brochure from 2022 (fictional) | /services/maintenance (thin) | Seasonal checklist, add-ons, what voids cover | Rewrite page with dated inclusions list |
| Can you work on a live site? | One sales anecdote (fictional) | None | Safety process, insurance summary, example photo permission | Create proof section after legal review |
Questions people ask about SEO, GEO and AEO
What is generative engine optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) means making your business easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity to find, trust and cite when they answer a question. It rests on the same foundation as SEO: useful, accurate pages that search systems can reach.
What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) means writing and structuring pages so a clear answer to a specific question can be lifted straight into a featured snippet, a voice answer or an AI summary. In practice: the question as a heading, the answer in the first sentence or two, then the detail.
How does answer engine optimization work?
It changes the shape of each answer on a page: one question per section, the answer first, plain words, and nothing important hidden in an image or a tab. SEO still decides whether the page can be found and ranked at all.
Are AEO and GEO different things?
They overlap. AEO is about the shape of the answers on your own pages; GEO is about being named and cited across AI answers, which also depends on what other sites say about you. Both rest on SEO.
How do I add schema markup for AEO?
Add FAQPage markup only for a real FAQ on the page, built from the same questions and answers readers see; our free FAQ Schema Generator writes it. Google says no special schema.org markup is needed for its generative AI features, so treat markup as a help, not a requirement.
What is AI SEO?
Making your business easy to find and recommend in AI-powered search: Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot. It covers much of what this guide calls GEO, and it rests on the same foundation as SEO: pages search systems can reach, trust and quote.
How is AEO different from traditional SEO?
SEO decides whether a page can be found and ranked at all. AEO shapes the answers on that page so they can be lifted into featured snippets, voice answers and AI summaries: the question as a heading, the answer first, plain words. Most pages need both.
