| Your question | The short answer | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| How much do Facebook ads cost? | Whatever budget you set. Meta suggests starting with at least $5. | Meta's pricing page |
| What does a lead cost? | About £3.20 for two UK travel clients, on £12 to £17 a day | Their Meta Ads Manager, dated snapshots |
| Is my daily budget a hard cap? | No. Meta can spend up to 75% more on a busy day, but no more than 7 times it in a week. | Meta's pricing page |
| How much should I spend a month? | Enough for about 50 results a week per ad set, which is when Meta's learning phase usually ends | Meta's learning phase page |
| Do UK businesses pay VAT on top? | It depends on how you buy and who bills you. Any VAT sits outside your budget. | Meta's VAT and tax pages |
How much do Facebook ads cost?
You choose the budget, for each day or for the whole campaign, and Meta's auction decides what each impression costs within it. There is no fixed price per click or per lead: Meta's own pricing page says there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. So the useful question is not what Facebook ads cost, but what a lead or a sale costs you, and whether that is less than it is worth.
Why do published Facebook ad cost averages disagree?
Search for Facebook ad costs and every site gives you a different average. They aren't wrong so much as measuring different things: different advertisers, countries, months and campaign goals.
| Source | Cost per click | Cost per 1,000 impressions (CPM) | What the figure is |
|---|---|---|---|
| AdKit, United States, September 2026 | $0.90 | $22.75 | Medians from the 280+ US accounts using its tool, one month |
| AdKit, United Kingdom, September 2026 | $0.48 | $16.47 | Medians from the same tool's UK users |
| Makometrics, updated July 2026 | $0.62 to $1.14 | $11.62 ($5 to $18 typical) | Averages gathered from other publishers |
Use figures like these only for a sense of scale. They come from other people's accounts, mostly from companies that sell advertising tools, and none of them knows your offer or your audience. We don't publish an average of our own, because two accounts aren't a market. What we can show you is what two real campaigns cost, and how to work out your own number.
How does Meta decide what you pay?
Every time someone could see an ad, Meta runs an auction. The winner is the ad with the highest total value, which combines three things: your bid, Meta's estimate of whether this person will take the action you want, and the ad's quality. Because relevance counts, a more relevant ad can win against ads with higher bids.
Meta's pricing page names what changes the cost of a campaign:
- Ad quality, your bidding strategy and your performance goal.
- The type of budget: daily or lifetime.
- The campaign objective, which Meta says plays a large role in what you pay.
- Who you target and when: smaller audiences, busy seasons and more advertisers chasing the same people all push prices up.
How do daily and lifetime budgets spend?
A daily budget is an average, not a hard cap. Meta may spend up to 75% more on a day with better opportunities, but it won't spend more than seven times your daily budget over a week. So a $20 daily budget can spend up to $35 on a busy day, and no more than $140 in a week.
| Daily budget | Lifetime budget | |
|---|---|---|
| What you set | An average for each day | A total for the whole run |
| Day-to-day spend | Up to 75% over on a busy day | Varies, within the total |
| The ceiling | 7 times the daily budget in a week | The lifetime total |
| What we use it for | Always-on lead campaigns | Fixed-length promotions and events |

What do Facebook ads cost per lead? Real numbers
Here are the main lead campaigns of two UK travel businesses we run Meta ads for, as their Meta Ads Manager showed them on the dates given. A lead here is an enquiry through a Meta instant form, not a booking.
| Client | Period | Spend | Leads | Cost per lead | Daily budget |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Travel To Kabba, a UK Umrah travel agency | 5 Sep 2025 – 4 Oct 2026 | £3,154.15 | 995 | £3.17 | £17/day |
| Easy Travels, a UK travel and visa service | 5 Sep 2025 – 5 Sep 2026 | £1,964.52 | 612 | £3.21 | £15/day |

Both are still running. Travel To Kabba's main campaign has since passed 1,000 leads. Easy Travels' second visa campaign brought 383 leads at £3.29, and the two together have passed 1,000. The Easy Travels campaign above reached 337,274 impressions, which works out at about £5.82 per 1,000.
These are lead costs in one niche, for offers people already search for, so treat them as an example, not a benchmark for your market. The full records are in the Travel To Kabba case study and the Easy Travels case study.
What we learned running Meta lead ads for two UK travel businesses
Numbers tell you what happened. These are the decisions behind them, and what we would tell a friend starting out.
Why we tested several campaigns before choosing one
Travel To Kabba sells Umrah packages. Rather than guess which campaign would work, we ran several lead campaigns side by side, watched which one brought enquiries most cheaply, then kept the budget on the winner. That campaign is the one Meta now labels “High performing”, and it brought 995 leads at £3.17 in the snapshot above. Let the account show you the winner before you raise the budget.
Working within Meta's rules
Meta doesn't allow ads to target people by religion, so we couldn't simply aim the ads at the people most likely to travel for Umrah. We built package-led ads instead, built around the trip, the dates and the price, and let a clear offer find the right people. Platform rules shape the strategy, and a specific offer can do much of the targeting for you.
Why qualifying questions are worth a few fewer leads
For Easy Travels' Schengen visa campaigns, the instant forms ask qualifying questions, so the team hears from people with a real trip and timeline. A shorter form would bring more leads, but more of them would go nowhere. We also kept ad frequency low, 1.44 and 1.89, so the ads kept reaching new people instead of tiring the same audience. A slightly higher cost per lead can mean a much lower cost per customer. How the form, the questions and the follow-up fit together is in our guide to the lead generation funnel.
Small budgets, run steadily
Both clients run lead campaigns on £12 to £17 a day, and have done for over a year. For a clear offer in a defined niche, we have found steady, modest budgets work better than big bursts. That is our experience, not a rule.
| Client | What we did | What it changed |
|---|---|---|
| Travel To Kabba | Several campaigns tested side by side, budget kept on the winner; package-led ads within Meta's rules | A campaign Meta labels High performing, at £3.17 a lead and now past 1,000 leads |
| Easy Travels | Qualifying questions in the form; low frequency; two campaigns side by side | Enquiries from people with a real trip, at £3.21 and £3.29 a lead |
How much should you spend on Facebook ads per month?
Meta says an ad set usually leaves its learning phase after about 50 results in the week after its last significant edit. That gives you a planning figure for each ad set:
Daily budget ≈ 50 × your expected cost per lead ÷ 7
Example at £3.20 a lead: 50 × £3.20 ÷ 7 ≈ £23 a dayOur travel campaigns run on £12 to £17 a day and still deliver, so treat Meta's figure as a guide, not a floor. If you don't know your cost per lead yet, work back from the leads you want instead:
| Step | Sum | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Link clicks needed | 100 leads ÷ 10% lead rate | 1,000 |
| Impressions needed | 1,000 clicks ÷ 1% click-through rate | 100,000 |
| Monthly budget | 100,000 ÷ 1,000 × $10 CPM | $1,000 |
| Average daily budget | $1,000 ÷ 30.4 | $32.89 |

Our Facebook Ads Cost Calculator runs these sums both ways, and the CPM Calculator checks a CPM on its own.
What makes Facebook ads cost more?
- A narrow audience, which leaves fewer people to show the ads to.
- Competition and seasons: the weeks before big holidays are busy for every advertiser.
- Tired or low-quality creative. Ads people hide or ignore score lower in the auction.
- An objective that doesn't match your goal, such as buying clicks when you want leads.
- A budget too small for the system to learn from, spread across too many ad sets.
- A slow page or a long form, which doesn't change the price of an impression but makes each lead cost more. Our five checks show where enquiries are lost.
Do you pay VAT on top of Facebook ads in the UK?
It depends on how you buy and which Meta company bills you. For UK businesses buying ads for business purposes, Meta adds VAT when your receipts come from its UK office, and a VAT-registered business can usually recover it. When receipts come from Meta Platforms Ireland, Meta doesn't add VAT, but you self-assess it. If you buy ads for a private, non-business purpose, Meta adds VAT.
Either way, VAT isn't part of your daily budget, so your total charge can be higher than the budget you set. Check the “Sold by” line on your receipts in Ads Manager, and ask your accountant: this isn't tax advice.
Ad spend vs management fees
Your ad budget goes to Meta. An agency's fee is a separate cost, so add both when you work out what a lead really costs. We sell this service, so here is our price plainly: Meta Ads management starts at $1,500 a month in the US and £1,500 a month in the UK, and the ad spend is paid straight to Meta from your own account. Ask any agency whether its fee is a share of your spend, because that pays it more when you spend more.
How to lower your Facebook ad cost per lead
- Lead with one specific offer and the place you serve.
- Refresh creative before results fade.
- Ask one or two qualifying questions in the form, so the leads you pay for are worth calling.
- Exclude existing customers and recent leads.
- Call leads quickly: a fast reply turns more of them into customers, which lowers the cost of each one.

Facebook ad cost myths, and the facts
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| You need thousands to start. | Meta suggests starting with at least $5. Our UK travel clients' lead campaigns run on £12 to £17 a day. |
| A cheaper CPM means cheaper leads. | Cost per lead also depends on how many people click and enquire. Halve the click-through rate and the cost per lead doubles at the same CPM. |
| The highest bid always wins. | Meta's auction weighs relevance and ad quality too, so a more relevant ad can beat a higher bid. |
| My daily budget is the most I'll be charged in a day. | Meta can spend up to 75% more on a busy day, but no more than 7 times the daily budget in a week. |
| More leads is always better. | In our experience, qualifying questions cost a few leads but bring ones worth calling. |
Questions people ask about Facebook ad costs
How much do Facebook ads cost per day?
As much as you set. Meta suggests starting with at least $5, and lets spend vary within limits: up to 75% over on a busy day, never more than seven times the daily budget in a week. Our UK travel clients run lead campaigns on £12 to £17 a day.
How much do Facebook ads cost per month?
On average, your daily budget times 30.4. Work it back from the leads you want, or from Meta's 50 results a week, as shown above.
How much do Facebook ads cost in the UK?
You set the budget in pounds and Meta's auction works the same way. For the two UK travel businesses above, leads cost about £3.20 each on £12 to £17 a day. Across our client campaigns, the typical average cost per lead runs from £2.50 to £6.50.
Are Instagram ads cheaper than Facebook ads?
They are bought in the same Ads Manager, and Meta can place one campaign's ads across Facebook, Instagram and its other placements. Costs differ by placement and audience, so break your results down by placement rather than assuming one is cheaper.
Is there a minimum budget for Facebook ads?
Meta suggests starting with at least $5 and running a budget for at least a week, so its system has time to learn who responds.
How long before Facebook ads bring leads?
Lead campaigns usually start bringing leads within days of launch, once Meta's ad review clears. Judge them after at least a week, because the system is still learning.
Are Facebook ads worth it?
They are when a lead costs less than it is worth to you. The most a lead can cost is customer value × close rate × gross margin; if your cost per lead is under that, the ads pay.
