Is Google Ads worth it for travel agencies?

It can be, because search ads reach people who are already looking for a trip. In Semrush's US data for October 2026, “google ads for tour operators” gets 170 searches a month and “google ads for travel agency” 40, both at low difficulty, so operators are asking. The catch is competition: booking sites and airlines bid on broad travel searches, so a smaller business wins on specific ones, such as a package, a departure city or a specialist trip.

We publish no Google Ads results for travel clients yet, as our travel results so far come from Meta Ads. What follows is the setup we use and Google's own rules.

How should a travel agency set up its first campaign?

  1. Start with a Search campaign for your best-selling packages, with one ad group per package or destination theme.
  2. Use keywords that name the trip and how people buy it, such as a package type plus a departure city you serve.
  3. Write ads that match each package: the trip, the from-price, what is included and the next step.
  4. Send each ad group to its own package page with an enquiry form, not to your homepage. Our guide to what makes a good landing page has nine checks.
  5. Add call and WhatsApp routes, and count every route as a conversion before you raise the budget.
  6. Check the search terms report every week. Google says it shows how your ads performed when “triggered by actual searches within the Search Network”, and when a term doesn't fit what you sell, to “add it as a negative keyword”.

Which location setting should travel ads use?

Google Ads has two options. The default and recommended one, Presence or interest, reaches people “likely to be in or regularly present in your targeted location” as well as people “who have shown interest in your targeted locations”. Presence reaches only people “likely to be located, or regularly located” there.

For a travel agency, the choice follows the offer. If you sell departures from UK airports, target the UK with Presence, so you pay for travelers who can actually fly with you. If you run tours in a destination, target that destination with Presence or interest, so you reach people planning a trip there from anywhere. Google notes that hotel campaigns use Presence only.

Presence, or Presence or interest? Presence: reaches people likely to be in your location; use it for departures from your own country; hotel campaigns use only this setting. Presence or interest, Google's default: also reaches people interested in the location; use it for tours in a destination; Google calls it the recommended option.
Pick the setting that matches where your travelers start.

What are Things to do ads and listings?

For tour operators and attractions, Google's Things to do shows tours and activities with prices and booking options. Google says partners can “list for free or advertise on Google”, and for individual operators it “strongly recommend[s] working with one of our connectivity providers”, which is often the booking system you already use.

How much should a travel agency spend on Google Ads?

Set a daily budget you can sustain for at least a month, because Google spends it unevenly. Google says your daily spending limit is “two times your average daily budget for most campaigns” and your monthly limit is “30.4 times your average daily budget for most campaigns”. So a $20 daily budget can spend up to $40 on a busy day, but no more than $608 in a month.

How Google spends a daily budget. Your setting: a $20 average daily budget. A busy day: up to $40, two times the average daily budget. A month: up to $608, 30.4 times the average daily budget. From Google Ads Help.
Google treats the daily budget as an average across the month.

How do you track enquiries from Google Ads?

  • Import your Google Analytics 4 key events, such as form enquiries and WhatsApp taps, into Google Ads as conversions. Google says the data “is shared between Google Ads and Google Analytics”.
  • Turn on call reporting for calls from ads: a Google forwarding number tracks each call, and a tap on it is charged like a click to your website.
  • Send lead quality back: record which leads became bookings and upload them, so Google can bid for travelers who book. Our conversion tracking guide covers enhanced conversions for leads.

What are the common Google Ads mistakes in travel accounts?

  • Broad keywords with no negative keywords, so ads show for free information searches and job searches.
  • Every ad sent to the homepage instead of the package it promises.
  • Presence or interest left on for packages that only depart from your own country.
  • No call or WhatsApp tracking, so the best enquiries look like no enquiries at all.
  • Judging the account by clicks or click-through rate instead of accepted leads.

Questions travel agencies ask about Google Ads

Is Google Ads good for travel agencies?

It can be, because search ads reach people already looking for a trip. It works best on specific searches, such as a package or a departure city you serve, rather than broad destination searches where large booking sites compete.

How much does Google Ads cost for a travel agency?

You set the budget. Google can spend up to twice your average daily budget on a busy day but no more than 30.4 times it in a month, and you pay per click at auction prices, so start with a budget you can sustain for a month.

What keywords should a travel agency target?

Keywords that name the trips you sell and how people buy them, such as a package type, a departure city or a specialist trip, plus negative keywords for searches you can't serve. Check the search terms report every week.

Should tour operators use Google Things to do?

Usually yes, because Google lets partners list tours and activities for free. Individual operators normally connect through a connectivity provider, which is often the booking system they already use.

Should travel ads use Presence or Presence or interest?

Use Presence when you sell trips that start in your area, such as departures from UK airports, and Presence or interest when you run tours in a destination and want to reach people planning a trip there.

Google Ads or Meta Ads for a travel agency?

Google Ads reach people already searching for a trip, while Meta Ads reach people before they search and suit instant lead forms. Many agencies start with the one that fits their budget and add the other once tracking works.
